The Plank

In addition to Bush's record-low approval rating of 37 percent in the latest Gallup poll, here are two other interesting numbers. One is that for the first time, Gallup finds that a plurality disapprove of Bush's "handling of terrorism" as an issue, by a 49-48 margin. But perhaps even more satisfying for partisan Democrats is this: "In a specific comparison with President Clinton, those surveyed by 48%-36% say they trust Bush less." Oh, the indignity! When Bush is losing on both security and trust, they've got to be panicking at the White House.

PS In October 2004 my colleague Jonathan Chait wrote a daring tongue-in-cheek column for the L.A. Times making the liberal's case for George W. Bush's re-election. (It's gone from the LAT archives but lives on here.) This poll is a reminder that things are starting to unfold much the way Chait (whose superb column you can now read here every Sunday) predicted.
