TEL AVIV — Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday left the right-wing Likud party to form a new centrist party and called for dissolving the parliament for an early general election.

"I am resigning from the party and forming a new one," Sharon, 77, said in a letter to Likud Central Committee Chairman Tzachi Hanegbi.
