■ Lee tours Manhattan
Continuing his tour of the US, former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) yesterday arrived in New York City, delivering a speech in Manhattan, as well as visiting the site where the World Trade Center had stood. Visibily moved, Lee cried several times as he spoke to reporters when asked about how he felt visiting the site. He praised US President George W. Bush for his handling of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying that a nation needs a strong leader. It was highly probable that China would attack Taiwan in a similar cowardly manner, using tactics of terror, the former president said. Lee also altered his original plan of traveling to Washington directly, and instead will visit Philadelphia to see the original US Declaration of Independence, as well as the Liberty Bell.
