New Orleans, Louisiana (AHN) - Local authorities have officially ended their door-to-door search for the victims of Katrina; brining the death toll to 972.

The state health department says a private company has been hired by the state and will remove additional bodies that are found.

The death toll probably will continue to rise, but authorities say their search thankfully yielded fewer bodies than feared.

Mississippi's death toll remained at 221.

Signs of normalcy in the city are slowly returning after five weeks since Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast.

One Roman Catholic school is open in the Algiers neighborhood. Archdiocese officials say their schools also reopening in areas outside the city. Some public schools in nearby parishes have also reopened.
