ATLANTA (AP) -- Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell's request that his racketeering trial be delayed until early next year has been granted by a federal judge. The trial, initially scheduled to begin on September 26th, was postponed until the third week of next January, U-S District Court Judge Richard Story ruled during a court hearing today.

Campbell sought the delay when he changed lead lawyers earlier this week. His new lead attorney, Billy Martin of Washington, asked Story for the delay, saying the defense team did not have enough time to prepare for the complicated case.

Prosecutors told the judge they did not think changing lawyers at this late date justified a postponement. The former mayor is charged with racketeering, accepting bribes and evading taxes. He has insisted he is innocent and expressed confidence he will be cleared of all charges at trial.
