The New York Times > Washington > Campaign 2004 > Newly-Minted Candidates Defend Agenda on Sunday Talk Shows: "Newly-Minted Candidates Defend Agenda on Sunday Talk Shows
By CHRISTINE HAUSER

Senator John Kerry and Senator John Edwards, newly minted candidates for the Democratic ticket in the presidential elections, defended their agenda on national security today as they continued their campaign on a two-week cross-country bus tour.
National security and the war on terror were a theme of Mr. Kerry's speech and of others during last week's Democratic National Convention, and today he reiterated his approach to military deployments and the need for the United States to build alliances.
The convention was held in the wake of last month's release of the 9/11 commission report, which highlighted steps that need to be taken to close gaps in domestic security. Mr. Kerry has vowed to immediately implement the recommendations and in appearances with Mr. Edwards on the morning television talk shows, he said that he saw the need to put an intelligence chief in the White House."
