Afghan Leader Enters Presidential Race
By CARLOTTA GALL

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 26, President Hamid Karzai surprised many here today by entering the presidential race with the brother of a martyred hero, rather than his powerful defense minister, at his side to run for vice president.
At a news conference in the leafy grounds of the presidential palace, Mr. Karzai said he was choosing Ahmad Zia Massood because he represented the younger generation and would work better for a shared vision for a united and democratic Afghanistan. "
