TOKYO — Suicides in Japan in 2003 rose to a record high, exceeding 30,000 for the sixth straight year, with over a quarter of them believed to have stemmed from economic difficulties, data compiled by the National Police Agency showed Thursday.
Amid a prolonged economic slump in Japan, a total of 34,427 people killed themselves last year, up 7.1% from 2002 and the highest number since the survey began in 1978. (Kyodo News)
